CALL FOR SUPPORT FROM THE EUROPEAN ANIMAL PROTECTION ASSOCIATIONS
September 2002

C.V.A. e-mail address : info@cva21.org
Internet : www.cva21.org

The C.V.A. (Comité de vigilance et d'action pour le bien-être animal, Committee on the monitoring of and action on animal well-being) is a French grouping of 30 animal and nature protection associations. It was set up in May 2000 and is currently striving towards the following three major objectives :
1) a reform of French public institutions dealing with animals, and in particular the requirement for the creation of a junior ministry (Secrétariat d'Etat) on the status of animals;
2) the establishment of a true legal status for animals (presently considered as movables according to Article 528 of the French Civil Code);
3) the incorporation of animal rights into the French Constitution and the European Constitution which is being drafted.

The recent measures adopted par Austria, Canada, England, Germany, Turkey, etc. are an indication that animal rights are slowly emerging both at the European and global levels.
The C.V.A. is looking forward to the adoption in France of similar measures on the protection of living beings.
In that context, the Committee intends to develop its project in collaboration with all European associations willing to set up a network of common objectives and likely to weigh on the decisions of European institutions. Non-European associations would also be most welcome to lend us their support and advice.

Would you kindly let us know :
-whether your association is willing to join the C.V.A. in its project, and collaborate in its reflection;
- whether your association is willing to formally support the C.V.A. without taking part in its work;
- whether your association has already taken part in legislative reforms in your country.

Thanking you in advance for your answer.

For C.V.A.,
Christophe Barbero
